Flaherty 2007 was made by friends and family at our home near the village of Santa María in the Aconcagua Valley. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were hand harvested and delivered in small picking lugs on 14 and 21 April, respectively, from the windy riverside Manzur Vineyard just outside of San Felipe in the Aconcagua Valley. The Manzur vineyard, which was planted in 2000, has alluvial sandy loam soils with lots of river stones. The Tempranillo, which was harvested on 31 March, is the first vintage from the vineyard at our home near Santa Maria, a warmer section of the Aconcagua Valley. The vineyard has well-draining loam soils. All of the grapes were crushed directly into one ton fermenting bins. We punched down the musts by hand three times a day throughout the fermentation. After macerating with the skins for an average of 18 days, the wine was basket pressed, racked to barrel, and then aged 19 months in barrel. The barrels included 20% new Hungarian and Romanian oak and 80% two- and three-year-old French and American oak. The 2007 Flaherty blend is 62% Syrah, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Tempranillo. The wine was filtered but not fined before being bottled by our friends at Viña San Esteban.
Tasting Description
Our 2007 Flaherty displays the classic fruit flavors of the Aconcagua Valley, with a rich base of dried fruits like cherry, strawberry, black plum, and dried peach (called huesillos en Chile). Notes of black pepper, spearmint, licorice, dark chocolate, toasted oak, forest floor, and new leather contribute complexity and depth. This medium-bodied wine has a twist of acidity on the entry and finish, while the sweet tannins contribute to an easy-to-drink style. Best before 2015.
Enjoy as we do with friends, family, and food.
