Flaherty 2004 was made by friends and family at our home near the village of Santa María in the Aconcagua Valley. The grapes were hand picked and destemmed directly into one ton fermenting bins. We punched down the musts three times a day throughout the fermentation, and then let the new wines macerate on the skins for 20 days. The wine was basket pressed and aged 16 months in barrel, with 80% used French oak and 20% new Hungarian oak. The final blend was filtered but not fined before being bottled by our friends at Viña San Esteban.
The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on the 12th of April. It is from the windy riverside Manzur Vineyard just outside of San Felipe in the Aconcagua Valley. The vineyard, which was planted in 2000, has sandy loam soils with lots of river stones. The Syrah was harvested on the 1st of May from the Caravic vineyard in the valley’s cooler Panquehue region. This vineyard was planted in 1998 on loam clay soils.
Tasting Description
Our 2004 Flaherty displays the classic fruit flavors of the Aconcagua Valley, with a rich base of blackberry, ripe plum, and dried peach (called huesillos en Chile). Notes of spearmint, dark chocolate, and toasted oak contribute complexity and depth. The medium-bodied wine has sweet tannins and is made in an easy-to-drink style. Best before 2010.
Enjoy as we do with friends, family, and food.
